Fracture Point: Divergence

Mission Log, USAF, Captain Reggie Burke
I don’t know if anyone will ever hear this recording, but it’s my responsibility to see this mission through to the end. All around me is a desolate scene of death and destruction. Washington, D.C. is an unimaginable atomic horror that swallowed up everything living and green. All that is left is a silent, ghostly landscape. The readings on my jump device say it’s October 28th, 1943. I’m in the middle of an unfamiliar dystopia eighty-seven years in the past.
The first time travel test was an apparent success. I must admit-- the surge in our systems just before I made the jump didn’t fill me with confidence that it was going to work. It seems I was wrong. The time frame I jumped from is no longer reachable. I triple checked, but the readings don’t lie: the time where I came from no longer exists, which means that I’m stuck here in this alternate 1943. I never imagined I would find something so terrifying yet so peaceful.
Readings show levels of radio activity consistent with approximately five years from when the atomic bombs went off, so I should be relatively safe from the radiation. It’s signs of recent human activity here that concern me. I found tech that’s not from this time era-- too advanced even for my time. I suspect that there are other time travelers here from further into the future. I don’t know what their motives are, nor if they are friendly or foe. If there are time travelers in 1943 besides myself, that means time travel was invented in this timeline as well. Perhaps there’s a way for me to get home. For now, I’ll stay alert and watch my back.
